Lesson Title: There’s always a Plus with Addition

Learning Objective: All students will master the concept of adding whole numbers with numbers not exceeding five.

Vocabulary: Plus, equals, adding, and sum

Introduce:

1. Review counting 1-10

2. Introduce vocabulary which will be on construction paper with the word and a picture

a. Vocabulary: plus, equals, sum and set

3. Connect Addition to Daily Life

a. Example: Have four students come up (2 boys and 2 girls) and make a human addition problem.

b. Example: Have students take off their shoes and find sets (ie. Sneakers, sandals or boots)

c. Ask students when they use addition or numbers for counting.

Explore:

1. Students will count out 10 Skittles and then teacher will pass out Addition Placemats to students.

2. Review with students the Addition Placemats

a. Review vocabulary

3. “I do, we do, you do”

a. Teacher modeling

4. Now students will start adding with teacher’s help.

a. Teacher will model 2 addition problems using the placemats and Skittles based on task cards.

b. Teacher and students will work on 2 addition problems using the placemats and Skittles based on task cards.

c. Students will work with a partner and do 2 addition problems using the placemats and Skittles based on task cards.

Extend:

1. Change manipulative (that teacher will provide) and do not use placemats this time.

a. Use counters

Assess:

1. Give each student a Domino Dots Worksheet.

2. Give each student three different Dominos to fill out their worksheet.

Follow-Up

1. Students will go home and find ten items and create five addition problems with those items.
