ELD Standard
- Begin to speak with a few words or sentences, using some English phonemes and rudimentary English grammatical forms and sounds.
- Answer simple questions with one-to two-word responses.
Assessment
- Teacher holds up a shape and asks, “What is this shape?” student answers verbally. Modification: Teacher asks student to point to the shape and say the name of the shape. Teacher shows the student the front, back and title page of the book and asks,”What is this? Student answers verbally Modification: Teacher asks student to show me the front, back and title page.
Content Objective
- 2.0 Students identify common objects in their environment and describe the geometric features.
- 2.1 Identify and describe common geometric objects (e.g., circle, triangle, square, rectangle, cube, sphere, and cone).
- Identify the front cover, back cover, and title page of a book
Lesson
- Use Natural Approach, including TPR
- Use manipulative to introduce 5 geometric shapes (square, rectangle, triangle, oval, and circle).
- Introduce a story about shapes and identify the front, back and title page of the book.
- Read the book Brown Rabbit’s Shape Book while inflecting voice and pointing to the shapes.
- In small groups have students trace and color their own book of shapes. Teacher models the name of shape…..”Color the Triangle blue”.
- Ask students to repeat back the name of the shape…. Teacher says, “Triangle and now you say it”.
- Groups sort and match manipulative by shape.
Assignments
- Students read their books to each other and then sort manipulative by shape.
Next Step
- Once students demonstrate their ability to identify the five geometric shapes move to sorting by two attributes like shape and color of shape or shape and size.
